While the lure of a name can lend a romantic air to vacation home shopping, others take a more practical approach when picking a vacation rental. Roselle H. from Scotch Plains, New Jersey, says, “I look at the furnishings and how clean and uncluttered the home looks.”
Rosemarie B. of Staten Island, New York, has been vacationing with her family on the Delaware seashore for the past 15 years and says, “Our primary considerations when renting a property are the quality of the home and amenities, the space configuration, and other renters’ comments and experiences.”
While some homes Rosemarie’s family has rented over the years did have names, it was not a deciding factor. She adds, “The quality of the property has not, in our opinion, ever been impacted by whether or not it is named.” However, she did note having a name usually made it easier to remember the Wi-Fi password during their stay.
What’s in a name for your vacation property?
As evidenced by these three vacationers, a home’s beauty and amenities still reign supreme when making a decision on a rental property. As an investor, those should be your focus. But should you also want to accent your vacation property with a name, choose wisely. Here are some things to consider:
- Put some personality into it: People go on vacation to get away from it all and have fun. Give your property a humorous name — puns are more than welcome — that makes them feel they can do just that.
- Keep your renters in mind: If you’ve got a log cabin in the woods perfect for renting to extended families, “Love Shack” is probably not the best name for it.
- Make it fitting: Incorporate the local geography or weather into the name so that merely hearing the property’s name evokes a strong sense of place.
If you do have a vacation property, it’s your prerogative to name it — or not. But a name does have a way of lending a property some charm. Remember, it’s always more fun for someone to say they spent their vacation at “Shore Enuff” rather than just a two-bedroom condo on the beach.
